Homemade Pizza Hut Breadsticks
Everyone knows there is something so scrumptiously addictive about warm breadsticks, especially when they are homemade! This recipe is super easy to follow and the results are phenomenal. They have the perfect amount of chewiness and softness. And the butter parmesan-herb topping is to die for. The best part about homemade bread is that you can make it ahead of time and keep it in the oven on the warm setting until ready to serve.
Here’s what you will need
- Dry ingredients- Bread flour, Yeast, Salt, and Granulated sugar
- Wet ingredients- Unsalted butter, Water, and Milk
- Herbed butter- Unsalted butter, Dried onion, Dried oregano, Garlic powder, Dried basil, and Salt.
- And top with Parmesan cheese!
How to Make Copycat Pizza Hut Breadsticks
- Make the bread dough. Combine the bread flour, yeast, salt, sugar, melted butter, warm water, and warm milk in the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix with the hook attachment on low speed, then bring it up to high and mix until the dough is smooth and elastic (this will take a few minutes).
- Let it rise. Once the dough has come together, transfer it to a large greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size. (The oven on the proof setting works great.)
- Roll out the dough. Now roll out the dough to 18×13 inches and transfer it to a baking sheet of the same size. Make slits in the dough using a pizza wheel, once down the middle lengthwise and then across 10 times. You should end up with 20 breadsticks in total.
- Let them rise. Once again, cover the dough and let it rise for about 30 minutes to an hour.
- Make the herbed butter. In the meantime, combine the unsalted butter, onion powder, oregano, garlic powder, basil, and salt.
- Bake the bread. Once the bread is ready, preheat the oven to 470 degrees Fahrenheit. Brush the dough with unsalted butter and then bake it for 10-12 minutes.
- Garnish the Pizza Hut Breadsticks. When the breadsticks are done, brush the herbed butter on top and evenly sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over it. Fully slice and serve the breadsticks warm with marinara sauce.
What to Serve these Pizza Hut breadsticks with
These delicious breadsticks are perfect all on their own, dipped in a delicious marinara sauce or some herbed oil. You can also serve them alongside entrees like Margherita Pizza, Creamy Tuscan Chicken Pasta, or Juicy Air Fryer Steak Bites. They’re also a great addition to a soup or salad, like this Spinach Salad or Chicken Meatball Soup.
How to Store Leftovers
To store leftovers of these Pizza Hut Breadsticks, wrap them in foil and leave them at room temperature. You can also place them in a bread box, or in a plastic ziplock bag in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for 4-5 days.
Can you freeze them?
Yes, you can freeze these Pizza Hut breadsticks. They will stay fresh for up to 3 months. There are two ways to do it:
- Freeze the dough- Place the dough on a baking sheet in the freezer until frozen, then transfer the dough to a ziplock bag. You can defrost it in the refrigerator overnight and let it rise for 30 minutes before making the breadsticks.
- Freeze the breadsticks- Place the cooled breadsticks (without herbed butter and Parmesan) in an airtight container or ziplock freezer bag. Defrost in the fridge overnight and then warm them in the oven before topping with herbed butter and grated Parmesan.

Full Recipe Instructions
Copycat Pizza Hut Breadsticks
Ingredients
- 4 3/4 cup bread flour spooned and leveled off
- 1 teaspoon yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
- 3/4 cup warm water 105 degrees F
- 1 cup warm milk 105 degrees F
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
- 1 tablespoon dried onion
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
Make the bread dough
- Start off by combining all the bread ingredients into your stand mixer fixed with the hook attachment.
- So you’ll add in 4 3/4 cup bread flour (spooned and leveled off),1 teaspoon dry active yeast, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar, 6 tablespoons unsalted melted butter, 3/4 cup warm water (105 degrees F) and 1 cup warm milk (105 degrees F).
- Turn the mixer on low speed and begin mixing the dough. Then bring the speed to high and mix until the dough is smooth and elastics. This can take quite a few minutes and some patience.
Let it rise in a warm place (oven on the proof setting)
- Once the dough comes together, transfer it to a large grease bowl. I usually grease mine with a drizzle of olive oil. Then cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Now roll out the dough to 18 x 13 inches. Then transfer the rolled out dough to a baking sheet 18×13 inches in diameter. Now make slits in the dough using a pizza wheel. I cut once down the middle lengthwise, then across 10 times. So you end up with a total of 20 breadsticks.
- Now cover the dough and let it rise again for about 30 minutes to an hour.
Make the herbed butter
- In the meantime combine 2 tablespoons of unsalted melted butter along with 1 tablespoon dried onion powder, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1/2 tsp salt.
Bake the bread and add the herbed butter and parmesan
- Once the dough is ready, preheat your oven to 470 degrees Fahrenheit. Then brush the dough with 2 tablespoons of unsalted melted butter. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Once the breadsticks are baked, brush the herbed butter on top and evenly sprinkle 3 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. Then fully slice up the breadsticks. Serve warm with marinara sauce.
Notes
- Freeze the dough- Place the dough on a baking sheet in the freezer until frozen, then transfer the dough to a ziplock bag. You can defrost it in the refrigerator overnight and let it rise for 30 minutes before making the breadsticks.
- Freeze the breadsticks- Place the cooled breadsticks (without herbed butter and Parmesan) in an airtight container or ziplock freezer bag. Defrost in the fridge overnight and then warm them in the oven before topping with herbed butter and grated Parmesan.

Is dried onion onion powder or minced dried onion
Dina says
Hi Brett, it should be dried onion powder 🙂
Brett says
Thank you I appreciate it
Kelly says
Do you cut the slits all the way through the dough or do you just “mark” the dough? I can’t decide which would be best.
Dina says
Hi Kelly, you would just make marks in the dough. Don’t cut all the way through.
Amanda Marrero says
Hello could I use all purpose instead of bread flour
Dina says
Hi Amanda 🙂 Technically you can. It just may not be as chewy since the bread flour has a higher gluten percentage. That is what gives it the chewy texture. I hope that helps clarify. I hope you love these breadsticks! 🙂
Jennifer says
This recipe is 99% just like Pizza Hut’s version. I may try cooking in a cast iron skillet next time, that may help to get it to 100%. I would probably add more butter to the pan, or to the dough while it rises. What I really like about this recipe is that I can double or triple the seasoning amount. I personally think Pizza Hut doesn’t add enough. This seasoning is great to have on hand to mix with other dishes as well.
