Garlic Cheese Bread
Who doesn’t love Garlic Cheese Bread? Hot from the oven and covered in melted cheese and garlic, this bread is truly addictive. And it’s also easy to make and really scales up a basic dinner. Whether you’re serving pasta, like this Creamy Tuscan Chicken Pasta, or a flavorful soup, like this French Onion Soup, Garlic Cheese Bread is the perfect accompaniment.
What you will need
- Loaf of country French bread
- Garlic cloves (pressed)
- Unsalted butter (softened)
- Mayonnaise
- Medium cheddar cheese (shredded)
- Mozzarella cheese (shredded)
Best type of bread to use
In this recipe, I used country French bread. This is one of the best breads because it is sturdy and wide, making it the perfect vessel for all the cheesy goodness that goes on top. But you can use other types of bread, such as baguettes, Italian bread, and wheat bread. Just make sure the bread is not too soft or it will become soggy. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous you can always make your own rustic bread or even a seeded bread too.
Flavor variations
- Make it spicy- Substitute pepper jack cheese for mozzarella and add some jalapenos on top.
- Caprese bread- Use fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, and fresh basil to make this version.
- Go gourmet- Make your garlic bread with gruyere cheese and mushrooms.
- Herbs & Lemon- Fresh herbs, feta cheese, and lemon- yum!
How to make the best cheese bread
- Make the cheese mix. In a large bowl, combine the cheeses, mayonnaise, softened butter, and pressed garlic. Mix together with a spatula.
- Cut the bread. Slice the bread in half and place them face-up on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
- Add the cheese to the bread. Spoon the cheese mixture evenly onto each bread half.
- Broil. Broil the cheese bread in the oven for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted and slightly browned.
- Cool and cut. Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes before slicing it into pieces with a bread knife. Serve it alongside some Broccoli Cheddar Soup or Spaghetti and Meat Sauce.
Can I make it ahead of time?
Yes, you can. If you’re short on time, you can prep the cheese mixture the night before and leave it in a covered container in the fridge until you are ready to bake the garlic cheese bread.
How to reheat cheese bread
The best way to reheat this bread is to place it back in the oven on a baking sheet for a few minutes. This keeps it from becoming too soggy, which often happens with a microwave.
How to store it
The best way to store this bread is in a ziplock bag with as much air squeezed out as possible. It can be kept at room temperature, in the fridge, or in the freezer.
How long will it keep?
If you keep garlic cheese bread out at room temperature, it will last about 2 days. In the fridge, it will be okay for about a week. And in the freezer, it will last for a few months (when doing this, do not slice it into pieces until you defrost and reheat it).

Phyllis Mason says
Do you have to use real mayonnaise, or can you use Miracle Whip?
Dina says
Hi Phyllis 🙂 I have not tried using miracle whip so I am not sure how it will taste. Personally, I am not a fan of miracle whip but that is a personal preference. Let me know how it goes 🙂

Put a cooking temp. So much unnecessary info but no cooking time

Hi Kendra, you must be looking through the blog post and not at the recipe card toward the bottom of the page. There is even a ‘jump to recipe’ button at the top. That will get you straight to the recipe. In the recipe card, I say to have the oven on broil and I do say the time or until lightly browned. Hope that helps 🙂
