What You’ll Need
Ingredient Notes
- Sparkling water- Use unflavored so that the flavors of the mint and lime really come through.
- Mint- Fresh mint leaves are the way to go to make this as close to a real mojito as possible.
- Sugar- Granulated white sugar.
- Lime- Freshly squeezed juice and lime zest is the key to a great mojito.
Add-ins and Substitutions
- Substitute soda for the seltzer- In place of the sparkling water, you can use Sprite, 7-Up, or ginger ale.
- Add juice- Give this a dash of fruit juice for a sweet, fruity flavor. Try passionfruit, strawberry, peaches, or pineapple juice.
- Substitute honey for sugar- If you’re avoiding refined sugars as sweeteners, then you can make the syrup using honey or agave.
How to Make Virgin Mojito
- Make the flavored simple syrup. In a large cup or mason jar, add in the freshly squeezed lime juice, lime zest, mint leaves, and sugar.
- Muddle the ingredients. Use a muddler to mash up the mint leaves to extract flavor.
- Add the ice and sparkling water. Now fill the rest of the cup with ice and pour in the club soda. Stir and garnish with lime slices and a sprig of mint.
Pro Tip: If you don’t have a muddler, you can use the thin end of a wooden spoon instead.
Recipe Tips
- Use lime zest- Don’t skip the lime zest, it adds a ton of citrus flavor without the bitterness of the white rind you’d get from lime wedges..
- Muddle the mint leaves- Crushing the leaves is what releases the mint flavoring, so don’t skip this step.
- Use the end of a wooden spoon to muddle- If you haven’t got a muddler, then you can substitute it with the handle of a wooden spoon.
FAQs
The ingredients for a virgin mojito are just sugar, mint leaves, lime juice, and sparkling water. Muddle the ingredients, add ice, and then pour in the sparkling water.
A virgin mojito is a non-alcoholic version of a classic mojito, so it does not contain the white rum. But both have the sugar, lime, mint, and soda water.

Make This Recipe in Advance
Make ahead: You can muddle the ingredients and store them in the fridge in an airtight container until you’re ready to add the sparkling water and serve.
Storing: The drink itself will only last an hour with the sparkling water because it will lose carbonation and the mint will become soggy.
Freeze: You can freeze the syrup for up to 3 months. Place it in ice cube trays and then store the syrup cubes in a freezer ziplock bag. Thaw some in the fridge, then add seltzer and ice, and serve.

Virgin Mojito Recipe
Equipment
- 1 Muddler (or the end of a wooden spoon)
Ingredients
- 1 lime juice
- 1/4 tsp lime zest packed
- 1/4 cup mint leaves packed
- 2 1/2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 8 oz club soda
Instructions
- In a large cup or mason jar, add in the freshly squeezed lime juice, lime zest, mint leaves, and sugar. Note: don’t skip the lime zest, it adds a ton of flavor without the bitterness of the white rind. Most people like to mash up slices of limes. I find that it makes the drink bitter very quickly, so the zest fixes the issue while keeping great flavor!
- Use a muddler to mash up the mint leaves to extract flavor. Tip: if you don't have a muddler, you can use the thin end of a wooden spoon instead.
- Now fill the rest of the cup with ice. (About 1 cup of ice).
- Now pour in the club soda, stir and enjoy!
