What You’ll Need
Ingredient Notes
- Smoked salmon- We use cold smoked salmon for this sandwich, also known as lox. You can get it at supermarkets and delis.
- Cream cheese- This ingredient adds some cheesy flavor along with some sweetness. The creamy texture is also killer in this sandwich.
- Cucumbers- You can use any cucumber you like, but I like English cucumbers for this recipe.
- Mini croissants- These smaller croissants make it easier to share these sandwiches with a group. But you can make it with regular croissants if you want, just have extra ingredients.
Add-ins and Substitutions
- Substitute the bread- Instead of croissants, you can make this on a bagel, white bread, wheat bread, rye bread, or even sourdough.
- Add other vegetables- Try this smoked salmon sandwich with bell peppers, capers, avocado, red onion, scallions, tomato, asparagus, or lettuce.
- Add some tang- Dijon mustard is a nice tangy complement to the other flavors in this smoked salmon croissant. Fresh lemon juice is also tasty.
- Add herbs- Dill and chives are great herbs for this sandwich. You can also add sage, basil, or fennel. You could also add seasonings like salt and black pepper.
How to Make a Smoked Salmon Sandwich
- Prep the croissant. Slice the croissant horizontally. Toast it lightly if you like.
- Add cream cheese. Spread cream cheese on both inner sides of the croissant.
- Add the filling. Layer some smoked salmon on the cream cheese on the bottom half of the croissant. Then add some cucumber slices.
- Close the sandwich. Top the cucumber slices with the top half of the croissant. Serve.
Pro Tip: Use room temperature cream cheese to make it easier to spread on the delicate croissant. Cold cream cheese is really hard to spread.
Recipe Tips
- Toast the croissant- Not only does this add a little extra crunch, it also makes spreading the cream cheese a little easier.
- Slice the cucumber thin- You don’t want the cucumber to be too thick and overwhelm the sandwich. Thin slices also stay in better when you bite it.
- Spread cream cheese on both sides- This is partly for flavor, but also because the sticky cream cheese will hold the salmon and cucumbers in place so they don’t slide out.
FAQs
Condiments that are rich in flavor or add tanginess are best on a smoked salmon sandwich. Mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and Italian dressing are all great options.
Soft cheeses like cream cheese, brie cheese, gouda, goat cheese, mascarpone, and Boursin are very good with smoked salmon. Cheddar and Swiss cheese are also nice additions for their bold flavors.

Make This Recipe in Advance
Make ahead: You can cut the cucumbers and slice the croissants ahead of time, storing them covered in the fridge and on the counter, respectively. But this is such a quick recipe, you don’t need much time to make it.
Storing: Store leftovers of these sandwiches wrapped in plastic wrap in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freeze: If the smoked salmon wasn’t previously frozen, you can freeze it in a freezer-safe plastic bag for up to 3 months. Try to get as much air out of the bag as possible. Cucumber and cream cheese don’t freeze well, so use fresh when you defrost the salmon to make these sandwiches.
