The best Tuna Salad Sandwich
Tuna Salad sandwich is a classic food that will never get old. Typically people mix tuna and mayonnaise and place it in between two pieces of toasted bread; I on the other hand like to take a little more time with my tuna sandwiches. It just tastes so much better when you add hard boiled eggs and onions in the mixture.
Sometimes the classic version of certain recipes is just so nostalgic. You might also enjoy:
What you’ll need
- Tuna salad– Tuna in water, Chopped onion, Hard-boiled egg, and Mayonnaise
- Seasoning- Salt and Black pepper
- Toppings- Tomato and Lettuce
What kind of tuna goes best in this sandwich?
I like to use Wild Planet’s Non-GMO wild Albacore tuna packed in water. If you can’t find this in your local grocery store, I like to get mine from Thrive Market.

How to Make this Tuna Sandwich
- Mix the ingredients. In a bowl combine the tuna, chopped egg, chopped onion, mayonnaise, salt, and black pepper.

What to serve with a tuna salad sandwich?
There are endless ways of adding sides to your tuna sandwich. Here are a few serving options that might be great if you’re packing this for a school or work lunch…
- Celery– is healthy and low-calorie addition that gives your lunch an extra crunch.
- Pickles– give your tuna sandwich a little hint of sourness that finishes off the meal all too well.
- Apples– If you like and sweet and crunchy kick, apples are a must!
- Chips– potato chips are a classic sandwich side that never gets old.
How to make it Healthy and Low-Carb
If you want to take it easy on the carbs, this tuna sandwich can be just as delicious without the bread. I like to swap the bread for lettuce and make it a Keto tuna sandwich.
The Paleo and Whole30 version
If you’re following a strict diet like paleo, Whole30, or keto, you can swap the regular mayonnaise for Whole30-approved mayonnaise. you can either make it yourself or buy it at a local whole foods store.
Cheryl from 40 aprons has an amazing 1 minute Whole30 mayo recipe you will definitely enjoy.
How to make a Tuna Melt Sandwich
- Place the bread and tuna on the skillet. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and butter both outer sides of each slice of whole wheat bread. Place one buttered slice of bread onto the hot skillet and lay a generous layer of the tuna salad mixture on top.
- Add the cheese. Then place a slice of cheese (American or Havarti) then place the other buttered piece of bread on top.
- Flip it. Once the bottom of the tuna melt is golden brown, flip it over and brown the other side the same way. Remove the tuna melt from heat and consume while warm.

How to Store
This Tuna Salad can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Assemble your sandwich whenever you are ready to eat to avoid soggy bread.
